Cupcake pricing calculator

Find out what one cupcake costs you to make, and what to charge per cupcake and per dozen to keep the margin you want. Free and no sign-up. It all runs in your browser, so nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.

1. Your batch

Your share of liners, boxes, toppers and labels. A liner at 0.03 plus a box of 6 at 0.60 is 0.13 a cupcake.

2. Ingredients

Type what you paid for the pack and how much this batch uses. The example is 24 chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, at typical US grocery prices. Replace it with your own.

3. Your numbers

Not counted here: your time and your overheads (electricity, gas, equipment, fees). For most bakers these are a big part of the real cost, so treat this price as a floor, not a final answer.

Price every cupcake you sell, properly

This calculator prices one cupcake recipe at a time and leaves out your time. The Popkiln Bakery Recipe Costing sheet (Google Sheets) does the rest:

How much to charge for cupcakes

Add up what the batch costs (ingredients plus liners and boxes), divide by the number of cupcakes, then set the price that leaves your margin. In the example above, 24 frosted chocolate cupcakes cost $16.78 to make, $0.70 each. At a 60% margin that is $1.75 a cupcake, or $21.00 a dozen.

Prices for common order sizes

At the example's $1.75 a cupcake (ingredients and packaging only, before your time):

OrderPrice
6 cupcakes$10.50
12 cupcakes$21.00
20 cupcakes$35.00
24 cupcakes$42.00
30 cupcakes$52.50
50 cupcakes$87.50

Your numbers will differ: run your own recipe above. Then add your time. Frosting, filling and decorating a dozen cupcakes can take as long as baking them, and that time is part of the price too.

Margin is not markup

A 60% markup on $1.00 is $1.60, which is only a 37.5% margin. To keep a 60% margin, divide the cost by 0.40: $2.50. This calculator always works in margin.

Cups and grams

Enter the pack and the amount used in the same kind of unit: weight with weight, volume with volume. Converting cups to grams needs a grams-per-cup value for each ingredient, which the full sheet includes.
