Price every cookie you sell, properly
This calculator prices one cookie recipe at a time and leaves out your time. The Popkiln Bakery Recipe Costing sheet (Google Sheets) does the rest:
- Unlimited recipes in one list, all feeding one overview.
- Adds your hourly rate and monthly overheads to every piece.
- Converts cups and spoons to grams, with 25 common baking ingredients already listed.
- Three pricing methods side by side, plus profit per hour of your time.
- Flags products you sell below cost or below your target margin.
- Scales any recipe up or down.
How much to charge for cookies
Total the batch (ingredients plus bags and labels), divide by the number of cookies, then set the price that leaves your margin. In the example above, 36 chocolate chip cookies cost $10.64 to make, $0.30 each. At a 60% margin that is $0.75 a cookie, or $9.00 a dozen.
Prices for common order sizes
At the example's $0.75 a cookie (ingredients and packaging only, before your time):
| Order | Price |
|---|---|
| 6 cookies | $4.50 |
| 12 cookies | $9.00 |
| 24 cookies | $18.00 |
| 36 cookies | $27.00 |
| 48 cookies | $36.00 |
Decorated cookies are priced on time
For drop cookies like chocolate chip, ingredients are most of the cost. Decorated sugar cookies are the opposite: flooding, detailing and drying can take several minutes a cookie, so your time can be worth more than everything else. Count it before you quote.
Margin is not markup
A 60% markup on $0.50 is $0.80, which is only a 37.5% margin. To keep a 60% margin, divide the cost by 0.40: $1.25. This calculator always works in margin.
