Get updatesHow much to charge for crochet plushies
Price a plushie from four things: the yarn you used, the stuffing and safety eyes, your time, and your packaging. Then add your margin, and any selling fees on top. In the example above, a medium plushie uses 105 g of worsted yarn in three colours ($2.92), 60 g of stuffing ($1.41) and a pair of safety eyes. Materials come to $4.63. Then 5 hours at $15 an hour is $75, so the plushie costs $80.63 to make. At a 20% margin that is $101.
Materials are a few dollars; your time is almost all of the price. That is why "three times the yarn cost" gives plushie makers a few dollars an hour, and why the hourly rate you choose matters more than anything else.
The same plushie at different hourly rates
| Your time is worth | Price |
|---|---|
| $10 an hour | $70 |
| $15 an hour | $101 |
| $20 an hour | $133 |
| $25 an hour | $164 |
How many grams of yarn did you use?
Weigh each skein before you start and again when you finish: the difference is what the plushie used. If you didn't, weigh the finished plushie and subtract the stuffing. A kitchen scale that reads in grams is accurate enough.
Custom orders
A custom design takes longer: messages, sketches, a new pattern, sometimes a second try. Some makers charge $10 to $20 more than for a ready-made toy (Elise Rose Crochet). Better still, count the extra hours in "Hours to make it".
Selling on Etsy or another marketplace
Fees come out of the price, so add them on top. With 10% in fees the example becomes $112, which keeps the same margin after the fees.
