Add up three things: the yarn, your time and your packaging. Then add your margin, and any selling fees on top. In the example above, a throw blanket in worsted yarn takes about 1,650 to 2,480 yards. That is 5 to 7 skeins of 364 yards; the calculator prices 7, so you don't run out. Yarn is $38.50, 20 hours at $15 an hour is $300, and with packaging the blanket costs $341.50 to make. At a 20% margin that is $430.
Most of that is your time. That is normal for handmade blankets, and it is why "three times the yarn cost" prices leave makers earning far below minimum wage.
Prices for every blanket size
At the example's pace (20 hours for a throw) and prices, with time scaled by area:
| Size | Inches | Skeins | Hours | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baby | 30 x 35 in | 3 | 7 | $160 |
| Crib | 36 x 45 in | 4 | 11 | $235 |
| Throw | 50 x 60 in | 7 | 20 | $430 |
| Twin | 66 x 90 in | 14 | 40 | $845 |
| Full | 80 x 90 in | 17 | 48 | $1,025 |
| Queen | 90 x 90 in | 19 | 54 | $1,150 |
| King | 108 x 90 in | 23 | 65 | $1,380 |
Your numbers will differ: enter your own pace above and the table follows it.

Fees come out of the price, so add them on top. With 10% in fees the example throw becomes $475, which still leaves the same margin after the fees.
How the yarn estimate works
Published yarn charts disagree by about two to one, so the calculator shows a range. It uses 0.35 to 0.9 yards of worsted per square inch, depending on how dense the stitch is (single crochet takes the most), and scales other yarn weights from there. Sources: Crochet Calc (worsted half double, 0.35 to 0.5 yd per sq in) and MrsCrochetWorld (blanket ranges and yarn weight multipliers).
For an exact figure, crochet a 6 x 6 in swatch in your stitch, weigh it, and choose "From my swatch". Bed sizes follow the Sleep Foundation's blanket chart.
Gear for this job
- Worsted weight yarn: The usual blanket yarn; compare price per yard, not per skein.
- Stitch markers: Mark the start of each row or repeat so the edges stay straight.
- Digital kitchen scale (grams): Weigh a swatch for an exact yarn figure, and weigh leftovers to know what a skein has left.
